Different Blank Media: Defined

We have been talking here about duplication, replication and other process that we do with different types of blank media. Guess it’s time to give these products their space in this blog to be defined and analyzed. So let’s start it off with the most known type of blank media, the compact disc or what we all know as CD.

Compact disc is an ocular disc normally used to store digital information and statistics. When it was introduced, it was initially intended to particularly store and playback sound recordings. But as time pass, upholding of other types of data have also been allowed. Compact discs were also developed hence two types came out in the market:

  • CD-R (compact disc writable) – once you recorded data and information on it, it cannot be reversed or altered, unless you got another CD-R and burn your corrected files again.
  • CD-RW (compact disc re-writable) – alterations are possible if you store your statistics and other digital files in here.

Another type of blank media is DVD or Digital Video Disc. Just like compact discs, its main purpose it to store video, audio or digital data. DVD’s dimension is also the same as CD’s but it can contain almost seven times larger than any compact discs. DVD’s varies base on the way data had been stored. There is what we call DVD-ROM which has a read-only memory meaning data saved can only be read and not written. DVD-R and DVD+R are recordable types but for a single use only and will only works as DVD-ROM. DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM are all re-writable type and can record and erase data several times.

On the lighter side, Blu-Ray Discs popped out in the market to supersede the DVD format. It was called as such in referral to the blue laser used to read the disc and it allows six times more storage compared to DVD’s. There is something more advanced than Blu-Ray Disc and it is the Dual Layer DVD. With the term dual, it signifies more storage capacity and lot more innovative. And who will never know the traditional Pro Tape and Video Home System popularly known as VHS?

As evolution progress, so as these types of blank media. They keep on adjusting with the fast pace of human life from being simple devices to complex ones.
